The Proposal

Who: RR and Bob
What: The Proposal
Where: AMC PI
Why: Birthday Date Night--I picked the movie!

You probably saw a glimpse of this movie being advertised. It stars Sandra Bullock as, Margaret, a high-power publishing executive. She is on the verge of a huge deal with an author who hasn't done an interview in years and she got him on Oprah. At the peak of the deal coming together, her boss let's her know that since she didn't finish her immigration paperwork she is being deported back to Canada. In a last minute ploy to save her job and stay in the US she tell her boss that she is engaged to her assistant Andrew, played by Ryan Reynolds. He agrees to the marriage after he learns that she is really his only ticket to an Editor position and a better career. They go to the immigration office to fill out the appropriate papers and are confronted by a skeptical nerdy agent. He challenges their relationship and threatens to blow their cover and deport her and jail and fine him.

In an effort to prove their relationship is real, the couple goes to Alaska to meet Andrews parents, friends, and family. Upon arrival Margaret is the obvious fish out of water but learns that Andrew's family is wealthy and soon finds herself being one of the girls and loving being a part of the family. Over the course of the weekend the couple learns about each other as preparation of the grilling they will get through the immigration process. Gradually the focus shifts from all attention on Margaret to Margaret learning that Andrew is actually a great guy. The rest would ruin the movie so you will have to go see it.

I was expecting this movie to be very predictable and just another comedy-romance. I was pleasantly surprised to see it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. There were some very funny moments and as always, Betty White, really steals the show! It was a bit predictable but it was still entertaining. If there isn't anything else showing that you are interested in and you want to see a movie this is a good fill-in.

The Hangover

Who:  Amber & Jonathan
What:  The Hangover
Where:  AMC Pleasure Island
Why:  It's got "Andy" from the office

I love a good 'ole raunchy comedy (Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), and this movie was no exception.  It was raunch and hilarious!

Doug (the sidekick from National Treasure) is getting married.  He is headed to Vegas with his 2 best friends (Bradley Cooper who is so cute and Ed Helms) and his future brother in law, who looks like a cave man.

They check in to a huge hotel suite, do a few shots to toast the evening then .... it's morning.  The room is trashed, a chicken is walking around, a tiger is in the bathroom, a chair is slightly on fire, a baby is crying from the closet and Doug is nowhere to be found.

The 2 best friends and the brother in-law try desperately to remember what happened the night before, but they have no clue.  Cutie pie Bradley Cooper is wearing a hospital wrist band, so they start there.  As the day goes on, and Doug is still lost, the boys discover more and more about what happened last night.

Why is Ed Helms missing a tooth?  Why is Mike Tyson in their hotel room?  Whose baby is this?  And where is Doug?!?

As the boys drive around Vegas following their clues, each gag is funnier and funnier than the first.  If you love comedies, I highly recommend this movie!

I think the credits were actually my favorite part of the movie.

Mamma Mia!

Who:  Amber, Jonathan and friends
What:  Mamma Mia!
Where:  Leu Gardens, Orlando FL
Why:  It was outdoor movie date night!

I've always been curious about this movie, but I know Jonathan would never want to see it. Thankfully, his work friends were all going to a local garden to watch their monthly "date night" outdoor movie - and it was Mamma Mia!

20-year-old Sophie lives with her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) in Greece Donna runs a a cute and rundown hotel. Sophie is about to get married and wants her father to give her away. The problem, she has no clue who her father is. After reading her mother's diary, she discovers that she "got busy" with 3 guys the same month 20 years ago. One of them must be her father!

So, what does any bonehead 20 year old do - invite all 3 of them to the wedding. The moment she sees "her dad", she'll just know ... right?

Wrong! All 3 guys are pretty cool, and she has no idea. The 3 guys finally figure out what is going on, and they all 3 assume they are her father. Donna is mortified all 3 of these guys are staying at her hotel.

Hilarity ensues, Sophie's fiance is getting jittery, but the wedding goes off with out a hitch. Not! Come on, this is the movies remember?

The entire time I was dying to find out which guy is Sophie's dad is! It was such a suspenseful movie! Is it cutie Pierce Brosnen (sp?). Some crazy hippy guy with eye tattoos on his knees and butt (yes, we see some old man butt). Or the business suit guy who just might be gay.

Did I mention that every 10 minutes, somebody would break out into singing an ABBA song? It was pretty clever how all these random songs fit together to make a movie musical.

If you like cheese ball weddings and cheese ball music, then I recommend this movie. It was fun, cheesy and the location was gorgeous!

Freaky Friday

Who:  Amber
What:  Freaky Friday
Where:  @ home off cable
Why:  It's a cute movie

Say what you want about Lindsay Lohan, but she was one super cute (and really good) child actor.

And, as usual, I forgot the character's names already.  So it's Lindsay and Jamie (as in Jamie Lee Curtis!).

Lindsay is a typical 17 year old.  She is really smart, but into rock music (not your stereotypical stupid teenager).  She thinks her mom is ruining her life.  Jamie Lee is a widower about to be remarried.  She is a psychologist, and a very calm, collected woman.  Her 17 year old is a little too wild for her tastes.

At their wedding rehearsal dinner (at a Chinese restaurant) they have a huge mother daughter blow out.  Their waitress offers them a fortune cookie to calm down.  Little to they know, the fortune cookie is magical!

When they wake up the next day, they have switched bodies.  They realize this, but they can't tell anybody - people will think they're nuts.  "Suuuuuure mom - you've switched bodies with your daughter.  Riiiiight!"  Lindsay has a huge test at school this day, and Jamie is getting married the next day!  Gross - Lindsay can't pretend to be her mom and get married, b/c you know what happens on your wedding night.

I'm sure you've all heard this story before.  They both struggle thru the day, learn valuable lessons, and live happily ever after.  But how Jamie Lee Curtis takes on Lindsay Lohan's characteristics, and vice versa is really cute!  Even though I'm sure you can predict the ending, I still recommend this movie.  I'm sure you can find it on Disney channel.

Buying the Cow

Who:  Amber & Jonathan
What:  Buying the Cow
Where:  @ home - recorded off cable
Why:  We just finished tiling the kitchen, and we needed to lay down on the couch

This movie was very random.  I have never heard of it before, I just randomly found it on cable.

If you like Ryan Renyolds, and you want to see him naked quite a few times, then I highly recommend this flick.  Unfortunately cable made his butt all 'fuzzy', but it was still enjoyable.

This movie revolves around Jerry O'Connell and his girlfriend, the hot chick from Billy Madison.  Jerry can't commit, even thought they've been dating for 5 years.  The hot chick goes to NYC for a fashion related job, and tells Jerry to make a decision to propose, or she needs to move on.

Jerry's problem goes back to when he was 18.  He saw a pretty girl in an airport and it hit him like a lightning bolt.  He gave her his address, and they wrote letters back and forth all summer.  However, this pretty girl was only 11 (but looked 16).  When the 11 year old's dad found out, he put a stop to the letters.  Years later, Jerry can only think of this mystery lightning girl.  He's never had that "wham" feeling with any other girl.

As he's pondering what do to about his current girlfriend (who is super hot), he sees a different girl in a diner and more "lightning" hits him.  He can't believe it.  It's the same feeling (different girl).  Too bad as he runs to the bathroom to hyperventilate a bit, the girl is gone.

Hijinks ensue as Jerry tries to find this mystery woman.  Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds is getting naked, another friend is getting married, and the girlfriend is getting a promotion and might move to NYC for good.

The plot thickens big time when we find out who the other friend is getting married to!  Will Jerry ever find this mystery cafe girl?  Or will he eventually track down this mystery airport girl?  Maybe he realizes his girlfriend is who he really wants to be with.  Stay tuned ...

Flubber

Who:  Amber
What:  Flubber
Where:  @ home off cable
Why:  I've never seen it.

I took a random day off work, and Flubber was on the tube.  I work for Disney ... Flubber is a Disney movie ... I figured it was my patriotic duty to watch it.

Robin Williams is a moron.  Twice now he's missed his own wedding b/c he's tinkering with experiments in his basement.  Ok - right there buddy, this relationship is over.  But, of course, his girlfriend gives him on more chance.

(I think the original movie was called "The Absent Minded Professor", so I guess Robin Williams had to prove how absent minded he can be.)

The private college he and his girlfriend work at is going bankrupt.  They will close soon.  Until - ta da! - Robin Williams creates flubber!  It's a gooey green substance that produces energy, or something magical that can make them rich.

Of course, there are some bumbling bad guys who try to take the flubber away (Captain Stollemyer from Monk and Shooter McGavin from Happy Gilmore, among others).  Robin Williams puts the bouncy flubber on the baskeball players shoes to help them win a game.  More craziness happens.

Although this movie wasn't all ridiculous laughs.  There were some touching moments between the 2 lovers (who are just trying to get married) and some robots.  Yes, I said touching moments between robots.  No, I'm not kidding.

Shutter

Who: Jaclyn
What: Shutter
Where: @ Home
Why: Who doesn't like a scary movie and Joshua Jackson?

I don't know what possessed me to rent this from Netflix, but I did. I think maybe I'm going through a Joshua Jackson phase since his new series "Fringe" started.

Anyhoo...this movie is about a newlywed couple, Ben and Jane (Joshua Jackson and Rachel Taylor). They go on their honeymoon in Japan since Ben is a photographer and has to go there for work.

On a dark and icy night, while driving in Japan, Jane hits a girl with their car. Freaked out by this, she drives Ben crazy since he didn't see anything and thinks she didn't see what she thought she did.

Later on, they start noticing weird images in the pictures they have been taking on their trip. Who is this mystery person? Further into the movie Jane finds out the woman is somehow connected to her new husband.

Even weirder things start to transpire as this girl haunts their lives. Will Ben ever be rid of his past?

This movie was a creepy concept for sure. Scary though? Not so much. Sure, it had its "EW!" moments, but nothing that would have any horror fan rattled.

Get a Clue

Who:  Amber
What:  Get a Clue
Where:  @ home - randomly recorded off Disney Channel
Why:  You can't go wrong with a Disney movie

How cute is little Lindsay Lohan.  She was about 13 in this movie.  She has great red hair, a face full of freckles and minimal make up on.  She 'was' a great little actress.

Lindsay Lohan is a rich kid in NYC with a great wardrobe.  But the refreshing thing is that she's really smart and extremely polite.  She has an attentive dad and a wonderful mom.  She's not a stupid movie ditz.  Very nice!

Lexi (Lohan) writes a newspaper story for her school paper, and her teacher turns it in to a regular newspaper - and it gets published!  It's a story about 2 of her teachers, with a photo of both of them.  Turns out, the guy teacher (Mr. Walker) is a fugative from 12 years ago.  Somebody sees his photo, and he 'disappears'.  Lexi, her best & super fashionable friend, and 2 boys from school team up to figure out what happened to Mr. Walker.

Will they find Mr. Walker alive (his car was found in the river)?  Who is this homeless guy wearing Mr. Walker's ugly jacket?  Who is this so-called private detective who is also looking for Mr. Walker?

If you're ever surfing the channels, and run across Disney Channel, and Get a Clue is on - I recommend giving it a try.

Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

Who:  Amber & Jonathan
What:  Princess Diaries 2
Where:  @ home - taped off Disney Channel
Why:  I like Anne Hathaway (from Get Smart)

Neither of us has seen Princess Diaries 1, but the plot wasn't too complex to follow.  Basically Mia has graduated college in the US, and has returned to the (made up) land of Genovia, where she will become Queen.  Julie Andrews is the current Queen, and Mia's grandmother.

But - oh no - there is a 200 year old law that says a Queen must be married!  What ever will Mia do?

Actually, it's not as cheesy as it sounds.  It is cheesy because Mia has a ridiculous bachlorette sleeping party with all the other royalty of the world (including Raven).  But the whole "you have to get married in 30 days" isn't as bad as you may imagine.  Mia agrees to an arranged marriage, because she is really passionate about being Queen.

Did I mention there is a guy who is the 2nd in command, who is waiting to be King if Mia does not get married?  And he's cute!  What ever will happen?

Sex and the City

Who: Alina
What: Sex and the City
Where: Altamonte 18 Movie Theatre
Why: Religiously watched the show during it's first run and now in syndication (if I'm up that late!)

I enjoyed this movie immensely! I was a little wary b/c I am a HUGE fan of the show and I had heard mixed reviews. You don't have to be a fan of the show to understand the movie but you probably should have watched a few episodes here and there to kind of get how the personality of the girls work. Knowing what happened in the series finale might be helpful too. They do give you a quick synopsis of the personalities of the each of the girls and what has happened to them from the last season of the show to the past 3 or 4 years in the opening credits so you won't be totally lost. I can't say too much of the plot without giving the movie away but it's basically picks up after 4 years. Carrie is still with Big, Charlotte is still married to Harry, Miranda is still married to Steve and still lives in Brooklyn, and Samantha is still with Smith.

I'm not going to give any spoilers away but I cried (didn't think I would) and I laughed a lot. Samantha lives in LA with Smith but she is in a lot of the movie so Samantha fans don't need to worry, she's still Samantha! There is an interesting plot twist with Miranda that surprised me. Charlotte was the comedic relief. Carrie's storyline was heartwrenching (grab the tissues) and heart warming. All four of the stars were great in their roles. They reverted back to Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha like they had never left and gone on to other things. Jennifer Hudson was a great addition to the cast too.

This movie was nothing like I thought it would be. It was so much better! Yes, there was some talk of fashion. Yes, there was talk of love. Yes, there was a lot of nudity and sex (they even show a penis for a split second!). Yes, it is a supreme chick flick but it was great! Some people may not like how the girls ended up where they did at the conclusion of the movie, but I don't think it could have ended any better. It was very true to their characters and the show. Viva Sex and the City!

edit:  I brought this movie review back up to the front because I finally saw it!  And it was great!!!  I'm still annoyed how these women throw money all over the place, and why does Carrie need an assistant?  I haven't seen her do a lick of work.  Regardless, it was great, and I recommend it to all.

27 Dresses

Who: Monica
What: 27 Dresses
Where: Home this time, in the theater when it came out.
Why: I enjoy chick flicks-

My Mom & I saw this when it was out at the theater. Since I had gift cards for Target from my class, I decided this was a movie I wanted to own. It's chick flick material and has a cutie in it!!

Katherine Heigle plays Jane, who has been a maid of honor 27 times. Thus the 27 dresses. She loves weddings, reading about them, planning them and being in them. She already has her own planned, though there is no one to make her dreams come true. She is madly in love with her boss, though he hasn't got a clue. Then her sister, Tess, arrives in town and steals the show. She & Jane's boss start dating and they are engaged before we know what's happening. Jane steps in as maid of honor and has to help plan the wedding of the one she longs for.

Meanwhile she's met Kevin, played by James Marsden (The Notebook, Hairspray & Enchanted) and he's found her story of maid of honor 27 times news worthy. He writes wedding stories in the paper and Jane lives for his articles, though she doesn't realize it's him who writes them until later on. He turns her story into an article and she doesn't appreciate that, on we go.

This is obviously a huge chick flick and Andy refused to watch this one. He said it was way off the "chick flick" chart and no way! I love the cast though and will watch anything with James Marsden over and over. The scene where she's trying on all the dresses is enough to keep me watching it! Very funny!! I'm not yet putting this on my list of all time favorite sappy movies, but I'll continue to watch it and see how I feel.

Oh and the extras on this are pretty good. They talk about weddings and how every little girl dreams of her day, then how different everyones dreams are. There is a section about the "Running of the Brides" at Filene's Basement and that is a neat story in itself. (I always thought it was Eilene's Basement) Anyway, I enjoyed all the extras!

American Wedding

Who:  Amber & Jonathan
What:  American Wedding
Where:  at home - recorded off cable
Why:  It sounded decent

Man, this movie was awful!  I admit, I wanted to keep watching b/c I kind-of wanted to see what moronic thing the boys would do next, so I guess the producers did their job.  Plus I was curious to see if Tara Reed, Chris Kline, that curly haired girl, and the rest of the gang from movie 1 came back for the wedding (don't waste your time - they don't.  They knew what was good for them).

The open scene did me in.  Jim and Michelle are at the fanciest eatery I have ever seen.  And what does she do ... climb under the table, pull down Jim's pants, and ... well, in typical American Pie fashion ... you know the rest ...

The rest of the movie was just as lame.  Stiffler and the 2 other guys hire some strippers.  Of course they have the party at Jim's parents house, b/c they are out of town.  Right?  Right?!?  Oh no, Jim's parents brought Michelle's prude parents over?  How will the boys get out of this one?  I could go on and on with this crappy nonsense.  Maybe I'm getting too old for crappy movies.  Or maybe this movie was just crappy.

What Happens In Vegas...

Who: Jaclyn
What: What Happens In Vegas...
Where: AMC Pleasure Island
Why: Another $6 A.M. Cinema (thanks AMC!)

This was a cute/funny movie. Normally I can't stand Cameron Diaz but she was tolerable in this, even if she did look like a $5 hooker. The story is about two people down on their luck, Joy and Jack who are played by Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. They both decide to go to Vegas to get away from their troubles and the end up meeting and marrying each other after a drunken evening. Of course, once sober, they realize it was a horrible mistake until Jack wins a 3 million dollar jackpot and then it's a different story.

The movie is very predictable but still hilarious. Ashton is typical Ashton and that works out pretty well. He doesn't do 'serious' very well, i.e. "The Butterfly Effect".

Each of their best friends stole the show in my opinion. Their snappy rips on each other are priceless. And if you do see it, stay through some of the credits as there are little "extras".

Made of Honor

Who: Amber & all her co-workers
What: Made of Honor
Where: AMC theater at Downtown Disney
Why: Boss took us to the movies. Yay!!!

This movie was a lot of fun. McDreamy is always fun, and the girl (Michelle something) was cute too. I liked her a lot actually - she wasn't a super model, just a normal, fun girl. Plus she had some cute outfits.

I was (and always have been) annoyed by characters in movies who go overseas for a short period of time, then come back to the states engaged. I mean, come on! Who gets engaged after only a couple weeks of dating? Plus the Scottish guy wasn't even cute!

This movie did have a couple "guy" moments. There was a lot of basketball played (with some short shorts!) and some unicorns flying out of butts. But overall, I would recommend this movie for "girls's night out".

And I'm sure we can all guess what ends up happening at the end ... "Who thinks these 2 should not be wed? Speak now, or forever hold your piece ..."
