This movie wasn't so much as "scare the pants off you" as it was "how is she going to get out of this".

Angela is a young go-getter who works in a corporate office.  She is stuck working late on Christmas Eve.  She is totally late for a family get together.

When she finally tries to leave, her car won't start.  Thankfully, the parking garage attendant is there to help ... or kidnap her!  It seems young Tom, our parking attendant who owns a very vicious dog has a crush on Angela.  And working the night shift in a parking garage is very lonely.  It's a good thing Tom has video camera everywhere, so he's been watching Angela for months.

I never got the feeling that Tom was going to hurt Angela.  Sure, he chained her to the table for a Christmas feast (in his parking attendant office), and he handcuffed her when they went to 'take a ride' around the parking garage.  Tom introduces us to a little back story about Angela, and about a jerk guy she works with.

Angela is pretty smart, and she's always thinking of ways to escape.  Unfortunately, Tom has keys to everything in the parking garage (floors are P1, P2, P3, etc ... hence the name of the movie), so it's impossible to escape.

Since the only 2 actors in this movie are Tom and Angela, I figured one of them would eventually kill the other one.  Who will it be . . .

Jeepers Creepers 2

If you've seen Jeepers Creepers (1), you know it was one of Justin Long's first leading rolls.  You also know it was a pretty lame horror movie!!  So when I heard they were making a 2nd one, I threw up a little in my mouth.

Honestly, it wasn't so bad.  In the sequel they didn't have to do a lot of character interaction, they just jumped right to the scary, winged man who eats people.

The movie opens and explains that every 23 years this weirdo comes out to feed for 23 days.  Thankfully, today is day 22.  Unthankfully, he's snatched a young boy from his father's farm.

Minutes later, a bus full of cheerleaders and basketball players gets a flat tire.  When the bus driver looks at the tire, she can tell it's been tampered with.  They are stuck in the middle of know where.  I wonder if that tire has been tampered with ... huh?!?  I mean, the crazy, fugly, winged guy is hungry and it's his last night!

Thankfully, the cheerleaders and basketball players aren't a bunch of horny, smoking hot teens (so cliched!).  They are a bunch of normal kids who are getting picked off one by one by the hungry dude.  All of a sudden *horn sound!*, the farmer shows up with a home made harpoon gun!

Will he save the day?  Or is this thing unkillable?

In typical horror movie fashion, it leaves it open for a sequel.  But the ending was really good!  It don't want to give anything away, but I was really pleasantly surprised.

Also, kudos for Justin Long coming back.  He only had 2 short scenes when he appears in a dream of a cheerleader, but it was refreshing to see.

The Messangers

This movie was more 'thriller' than horror.  It was scary, but it's wasn't a bloody gore fest.

The movie opens with a mother, teenage girl and a young boy running thru their large farm house from spooky Grudge-like apparitions.

Fast forward 5 years, and a family is moving in to the farm house.  The teenager, Jess (the girl from Twilight) is obviously not thrilled about moving from Chicago to middle of nowhere North Dakota.  Bad things start happening to her, and only here, so of course her parents don't believe her.

At first this seemed like a typical super natural thriller.  You know, the house is alive type of movie.  But throw in a little surprise ending, and it was pretty good!

Stay Alive

I had never heard of this movie before, but I found it on the Chiller network.  It said it stared Frankie Munez, so I figured I'd give it a try.

The plot is some what ridiculous, but this movie really scared me.  Maybe it was because I was watching it on Friday the 13th, it was dark outside, I was all alone, and I found 2 cats on my back porch (I don't have a cat).

Anyway, this movie opens with a guy playing a video game called Stay Alive.  Actually, he's a video game tester, so this game isn't even out yet.  He dies in the game, and it freaks him out a little bit.  1 hour later, he's dead in real life.

Another group of hard core gamers start playing the game, and they are in trouble too.  The game is actually based on a real legend of some freaky lady who liked to kill young girls.

Long story short, a couple of gamers die, while the rest figure out how to face this wacko lady, with a little help from the video game.  The spirit lady was kind-of freaky, and there were a lot of startling scenes (like scary stuff jumping out from nowhere).  If you like scary movies, then you might want to check it out.  Otherwise, you can probably pass.

Freddy vs. Jason

Why:  The 3rd movie in my horror movie marathon

This movie was cheese ball city - but if you are a fan of either Freddy Krugar (Nightmare on Elm Street) and/or Jason Voorhes (Friday the 13th), then you must see this movie!

The movie starts out with Freddy's back story.  They even show clips from his old movies!  Basically, the kids on Elm Street have forgotten all about him, so he's lost all his power.  His plan is to have Jason start killing people in Elm Street, then everybody will think he's back ... start to remember him, and *wham* his power will be resorted!  Then he can get rid of Jason, and continue killing kids himself.

Of course, the first to go are the slutty teens and the underage drinkers.

There is a quality back story with our main girl (somebody I've never seen before), her doctor father who works in a mental hospital and her boyfriend from 4 years ago who disappeared, who was actually in the mental hospital (although she didn't know that).

The kids and a young cop realize what is going on, and devise a plan to bring Freddy out of their dreams and into real life so Jason can get rid of him.  Let the serial killer showdown begin!

Who will win?!?  I'll never tell ... although the new Friday the 13th movie came out last weekend, so maybe that gives it away a little bit.

Final Destination 2

I love horror movies - and the movies in the Final Destination series scare the poop out of me.  I think it's because they are so 'real'.  I mean, there are people dying right and left, which is unrealistic, but they are dying from 'real' things.  There isn't a zombie, or a killer shark, or a maniac with a chainsaw.  They are falling off ladders or getting in car crashes.

This movie starts out with a girl (wow - I already forgot her name.  It's AJ Cook - who plays JJ on Criminal Minds) going on a spring break with 3 friends.  She gets on the highway, and all of a sudden a huge log falls off a logging truck.  The truck screeches to a hault, more logs fall off, and there is a huge pile up.  Her car is flipping over and over.  Many people are killed in the crash.  A burning semi truck is headed right for her upside down car ... then she wakes up.  She's had a crazy vision of what is about to happen.  Sitting at the green light, about to merge on to the highway, she realizes all the cars behind her will all crash with her.  She turns her car so nobody can get by.

Of course, all the cars stuck behind her at the light are totally annoyed ... until they realize she saved their lives ... or did she?

You see, when it's your time to go, it's your time to go.  Death has a plan.  So one by one, each person who was supposed to die in the car crash is killed.  The spooky (and gross!) thing about this movie is the way they die.  Like I said, it's no maniac killer, it's just life.  Every day life is killing these people.

I can't wait to check out the 4th movie in this series.  I think it comes out this year.

Vacancy

Why:  I wanted to see it.

This movie scared the crap out of me!  I think it scared Jonathan too.  I think he said it best when he said, "It was scary b/c it could really happen."

Luke Wilson and Kate Beckensale (I already forgot their movie names) are driving in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night.  Kate wakes up and asks where they are.  Luke explains that there was a wreck on the highway, so he took a shortcut.  Unfortunately their car isn't cooperating.  It breaks down.

They walk 2 miles up the road to a dumpy hotel.  They are the only people at the hotel.  The TV doesn't work, so Luke pops in a VHS tape that's sitting on the TV.  (seriously, who does that, and who watches VHS tapes anymore).  It's a horror movie, looks homemade and ghetto.  Wait a minute ... the movie takes place in the room they are in!  Wait a minute, it's not a movie, it's a recording of something real - somebody dying!

Side note:  These tapes are horrible to watch.  It looked really real, and it was gross.

When Luke and Kate figure out what's going on, they try to escape.  Unfortunately, the 3 guys who run the hotel have started to "hunt" them.

Unlike most horror movies, Luke and Kate are pretty smart.  They sit down and actually watch more horrible tapes, and figure out how the 3 guys work.  They almost escape a couple times, but it never works.

I'm going to stop now, because I don't want to give anything away.  Will Luke and Kate get away?  Will only 1 get away?  Will they suffer the same fate as a lot of other guests at the hotel?

This was a very unique horror movie.  It was also pretty gross, but if you like horror movies, I highly recommend it!

Halloween H20

Here's a great holiday classic huh?  Actually, I watched it the day after Halloween, and I'm finally movie yak-ing about it.

This is a great horror movie simply because Jamie Lee Curtis is in it.  

If you are unfamiliar with the original Halloween movie, it came out in 1978.  An unknown actress named Jamie Lee Curtis was the main star (as a teenager).  She is babysitting on Halloween, and all her friends are brutally murdered by Michael Myers, who happens to be Jamie Lee's brother.  

So big KUDOS for Jamie Lee Curtis to come back to the franchise 20 years later that originally made her a star!  You don't see Jennifer Aniston coming back to do any Leprechaun movies or Johnny Depp coming back to Nightmare on Elm Street (although, I think they killed him off).

Flashback 20 years later (this movie came out in 1998).  Jamie Lee (Laurie Strode) has a 17 year old son.  She is the head master of a luxury high school, where the kids live in dorms, and the entire high school has a fence around it.  Laurie is still freaked out by her brother Michael Myers.  She knows he will eventually hunt her down and find her.  Her son (Josh Hartnett - possibly one of his first movies) knows Laurie is messed up in the head b/c of all her horrible past.  He tries to help her, but it's getting old.  He's getting annoyed and tells her to, "get over it already!"

Unfortunately, this is the year Michael tracks Laurie down.  99% of the school is on a trip, but Laurie, her son, his girlfriend (Michelle Williams), 2 other slutty kids, and a school counselor are all at the school.  You know the slutty kids are easy kills ... but who else will die?

Will Laurie finally face Michael and kill him once and for all?  Or will Michael finally get what he's been after for 20 years, to kill his other sister?

Saw

I'm not sure how much Jaclyn (who also writes for Movie Yak) enjoyed Saw (she was a first timer.  I think I'm about a 6-timer!), but I absolutely love it!  I actually found it in the Walmart $5 bin the following day and finally bought it.

This is not your typical horror movie.  This movie really goes into some big time character development for every single character.  So you really know their back story, and you actually care about them.  It's also not a crazy, psycho super-power killer.

"Jigsaw" is just a regular guy (or girl - we have no clue who it is), who chooses people who take life for granted (drug addicts, people cheating on their spouses, etc.).  He sets up elaborate (almost unreal) traps for them.  If they can get out of the trap, they walk away unharmed.  Well, honestly, they are usually harmed and bleeding a little bit.  If they can't get out of the trap, the trap will kill them.

Dr. Gordon (Cary Elways - a cutie!) and Adam (one of the writers of the movie too) wake up from being knocked unconscious in a super gross bathroom.  They are chained by the ankle to the wall.  The game/trap is the Dr. Gordon has to kill Adam before 6pm.  If not, his family will die.  So it's a pretty tough game for Adam - he has to wait to die!  While Dr. Gordon and Adam try to figure out what's going on, they get to talking and figure out how they are connected to one another.  Jigsaw has left clues and props hidden around the room, to help them play the game.

One of the props are 2 saws.  Are they meant to saw thru the chains ... or saw thru something else?  (Ewwwww!)

During this time there are flashbacks to Adam and Dr. Gordon's lives.  We also see 2 cops (Danny Glover and another guy) who have been trying to capture Jigsaw for about 6 months now.  We also see some super gross victims of Jigsaw's games, who lost their 'games'.

I can't recommend this movie enough!  It's about 30% horror, 50% thriller and 20% drama.

And the ending is INSANE!  You will never, in a million years guess what happens!!!  And I truly mean that - it's nuts!  And, yes, there has been Saw 2, 3, 4 and 5.  And they are making Saw 6, and I believe Saw 7.  Saw 2, 3 and 4 are actually pretty decent movies.  But don't let all these other Saws scare you away.  The original movie is 1000X better than the sequels.  I highly recommend it!  I think it's in my "Top 5 favorite movies of all time" list, and that's really saying something.

The Ruins

Why: Didn't want to bother seeing it in the theater

The Ruins is about two couples of spring breakers in Mexico who are having a grand old time until a creepy (in my opinion) German guy asks if they want to go to a site where his brother is excavating.

The crazy kids, being up for adventure decide to go. When they get to the site, which turns out to be a Mayan temple, there are some local yokels that come out of the woods and start screaming at the tourists in a language they can't understand.

Something bad happens then, but I won't give it away. The kids retreat up the temple and worse things start to happen from there. Hallucinations, chaos and tons of bloodshed.

Overall, not bad for a rental, but glad I didn't waste time in the theater. I hear the book is better.

Grindhouse - Planet Terror

Why:  I've been dying to see it!

Let's just say, I can see why Grindhouse didn't make any money at the box office.  This sucker is long!  I only watched the first movie, and I was tired.  I don't think I could've handled seeing both movies at the same time.

Planet Terror is the movie with the girl with the machine gun for a leg.  I know you know what I'm talking about!

It was actually a pretty cool movie.  There is a crazy radiation leak, and it turns pretty much everybody into a zombie.  There are a handful of people who are immune (for some reason), and they go around killing zombies.  The zombies can be killed (I think), if you blow them away with a powerful gun.  Luckily everybody seems to have an incredibly powerful gun.

When I say killing zombies, I mean blowing them apart.  I think I saw more blood in this movie than at a blood bank.  Who knew a gunshot to the chest made you explode?

Did I mention there was a chick with a machine gun for a leg?

Grindhouse was supposed to be a throw back to stupid 70's horror movies.  So sometimes the screen is kind-of fuzzy, you see film real lines, and during a sex scene (w/ machine gun leg chick), the 'film reel' actually melts.

This movie ends, I think, at Tulum in Mexico.  It's where Jonathan and I visited during our last Disney Cruise.  If it's not Tulum, it looks just like it.

If you have FOREVER to kill, then check out Grindhouse.  If you only have 1.5 hours to kill, then check out Planet Terror.  It's worth it just to see what happens to Quinten Terrintino's wang.  Ouch!  Seriously ...

Final Destination

Why:  Great movie!

This is the first movie that made me SCREAM out loud in the movie theater.  I won't give anything away, but in involved a bus.  And I'm taking about a loud scream in the movie theater.  And I'm not a screamer.

The entire high school is headed to Paris, but Alex is getting paranoid.  He's not a fan of flying.  Then, when he buckles in he has an intense vision of the plane going down (this vision lasts for about 15 minutes - and while it's sad when plans crash, it's a fabulous scene!).  He wakes up from his vision, realizes it was a dream ... but he knows it will come true.  He freaks out, and runs off the plane.  A couple of his class mates try to stop him from acting like a jack arse, and about 6 kids get kicked off the plane.  The plane takes off, and 2 minutes later is crashes.  The 6 kids who "escaped" were really mad that they are missing their flight to Paris, but now are dumbfounded and amazed ... they are alive!

Unfortunately, the 6 kids were 'supposed' to die.  It was their time.  So death eventually comes for them ... unless they can outsmart death.

What makes Final Destination (and it's sequels) such great horror movies is the simplicity of it.  This is not a crazed killer or a flesh eating virus killing people - it's every day objects, like a beach towel or a drive thru window.  And that is really freaky.  It actually makes you think that you could die any day by doing every day things.  It's a great movie, but it leaves you really creeped out in the end.

Plus, don't say I didn't warn you about that bus scene ...

Shutter

Why: Who doesn't like a scary movie and Joshua Jackson?

I don't know what possessed me to rent this from Netflix, but I did. I think maybe I'm going through a Joshua Jackson phase since his new series "Fringe" started.

Anyhoo...this movie is about a newlywed couple, Ben and Jane (Joshua Jackson and Rachel Taylor). They go on their honeymoon in Japan since Ben is a photographer and has to go there for work.

On a dark and icy night, while driving in Japan, Jane hits a girl with their car. Freaked out by this, she drives Ben crazy since he didn't see anything and thinks she didn't see what she thought she did.

Later on, they start noticing weird images in the pictures they have been taking on their trip. Who is this mystery person? Further into the movie Jane finds out the woman is somehow connected to her new husband.

Even weirder things start to transpire as this girl haunts their lives. Will Ben ever be rid of his past?

This movie was a creepy concept for sure. Scary though? Not so much. Sure, it had its "EW!" moments, but nothing that would have any horror fan rattled.

Psycho

I think I am the ONLY person who likes this movie.  No, I'm not talking about Alfred Hitchcock's famous Psycho ... I'm taking about the stupid FRAME BY FRAME remake somebody made in the 90's.  It's the exact same movie, only with different actors.  It's the same dialog, the same scenes - everything is the same.  Lame I know, but I love it!

Maybe I'm a big jerk, but I just don't like black and white movies, so I really enjoy this version of Psycho in color.  Plus, this time Anne Heche is the damsel in distress.  Say what you want about her, but she's great in this movie.  And Vince Vaughn runs the hotel.  Great stuff.

I think we all know the premise of Psycho - but if you are also not a fan of black and white horror movies, here we go:  Anne Heche is running away (with a bunch of money) and stays in a rinky dink hotel run by Vince Vaughn.  Vince Vaughn's crazy mother stabs her to death in the shower (I think we've all seen this scene).  The police and Anne Heche's sister come looking for her ... they confront the crazy mother ... and this is where I leave you hanging ...

Ghost Ship

Why:  I've wanted to see it

I remember wanting to see this movie when it came out (2003?), but I heard it was just awful - almost the worst movie ever made.

You know what - it wasn't half bad.  I like my horror movies to be creepy and no questions left unanswered.  Normally there is a bad guy, and you don't understand why he's bad, and why he feels the need to kill people.  Thankfully, a little girl ghost helps us see the entire back story via flashback.  I love it!!!

The opening scene of this movie was pretty darn sweet.  It's 1962 on a luxury cruise ship.  Everybody is gathered together, dancing the night away.  All of a sudden, a cable snaps and goes hurling thru the passengers.  And I mean that literally - THRU the passengers.

Fast forward 50 years, a ship of scavengers finds the cruise ship and plans to tow her back to shore.  They find a little girl ghost onboard.  Then things start to go horribly, horribly wrong.

All in all, I say it's a worthy horror movie.  Even the ending was kind-of unique.  

If you like horror (it wasn't even very scary), then I recommend it.

Jaws 2

Why:  It's Shark Week!

This movie was pretty lame.  Maybe it's because I'm spoiled with special effects, but this shark looked super, duper fake!  It's mouth would barely move, it would just darn it's giant head out of the water, then you'd see a pool of blood in the ocean.

I can't remember the first Jaws very well.  This movie stars the same Aminityville Police man.  He's got a kid in high school and a 10 year old.  I guess if I remembered his kids from the first movie, then I could determine how much time had passed.

It's summer time - the height of tourist season in Aminityville.  And what do you know - a shark is back.  Unfortunatly, nobody in town has seen him.  He's killed 2 divers (no evidence - it was just an accident right?) and 2 water skiiers have died (no evidence - it's just a boating accident right?).  Nobody thinks there is a shark, except our hero from the first movie!

A bunch of high school kids go boating (including our hero's 2 kids).  *insert music here - dun dunt, dun dunt, dunt dunt dunt dunt dooooo-doooooo!*  Shark attack!

South Park: Imagination Land

Why: We love it!

Since Family Guy did a Star Wars episode and Robot Chicken did a Star Wars episode, I guess South Park figured they also had to do a Star Wars episode. Or maybe they did it first - who knows and who cares. Actually, all this had to do with Star Wars is the classic opening with the words flying off into space, and it was a 3-parter (with names like Episode 1, 2 and 3).

If you can tolerate the crudness (and all the swearing) of a South Park episode, then I highly encourage watching this movie. I find it HILARIOUS! It helps a little if you are a fan of the show. I got the reference to the Cartman's Christmas Critters episode (best episode EVER - IMO), but I didn't get the reference to Al Gore's Man-Bear-Pig (Jonathan had to tell me about that previous episode). If you have no clue what I'm talking about, that's ok too.

Basically, the boys take a hot air balloon ride to Imagination Land. As a child of the '80s, I thought Imagination Land rocks! Every single cartoon or Imaginary character lives there. Every single one you remember (Capt. Crunch, Strawberry Shortcake), and didn't remember (Snarf) is there. It's so much fun to watch and point out random characters in the background. As soon as the South Park boys land there, the evil imaginary characters (Freddy Kruger, that buffalo warrior from Narnia, Cartman's Christmas Critters) attack! Butters is the only one that can save Imagination Land!

There is a side story about the governmant trying to save Imagination Land. And there is a really, REALLY crude story about Kyle and Cartman, and a bet they made.

This movie is in stores now, but I watched it on Comedy Central. Check it out! It's not every day you see a Smurf trying to pick up a sword.

Slither

Why: It has "Pam" from The Office in it!

I remember seeing previews for this movie a couple months ago. Then it disappears from theathers in about 24 hours. I should've trusted the theater goers. This just wasn't a very good movie. It's kind-of one of those movies that just ENDS. I was sitting on the couch thinking, "ok, I guess I'm done watching ..."

The movie is about a giant slug who falls from outter space, and tries to take over the world, starting with one tiny town. Of course, the slug is defeated, but not until crawling into people's mouths and shooting stuff into their stomaches. Plus, "Pam" is only in like 2 movie scenes!!!

Even though I saw this movie for free, I still felt kind-of ripped off. It wasnt' worth my time. I was really hoping for a scary horror movie. Instead I got put to sleep.

The Hills Have Eyes II

Why: I loved the first Hills Have Eyes (the original - well, the remake of the true original)

I kept hearing how awful this movie was - but it really wasn't a total waste of my time. Granted, the first one is 1000X better (yes, one thousand), and I did see this for free on HBO, but I'm not asking for that hour and a half back of my life! Was it a little lame - sure!

Was it a everything you want in a fun/random horror movie (lots of blood, lots of gore, lots of *eeeeeeeek*? Yes!

P.S. I highly recommend seeing the Hills Have Eyes I before seeing this movie. You don't really have to, but it does reference things that happened in the first one. Plus the first movie is just really, really, REALLY good. It has a plot, really great characters (a loving American family), plus lots of blood and gore.

Seven

Why: B/C it was on and we had nothing else to do.

We had by far, the laziest 3 day weekend on record. We watched parts of a ton of movies on TV, "Seven" being the only one we caught in full. I know I've seen this movie when it came out, but I had forgotten EVERYTHING about it! It's funny to look back at a Brad Pitt movie when he was just arriving to be a Hollywood Hunk. I don't adore him as much as others, but he does a great job in this movie. Morgan Freeman is always fantastic, especially when he plays a detective/police kind of part. I totally forgot Gwyneth Paltrow was in this and Kevin Spacey too!!

The plot goes something like this. There is a killer on the loose (who we don't "see" until the end) and we eventually find out that there will be 7 murders. The murderer is following a sort of random pattern with murdering someone to represent the 7 deadly sins. (Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Rath, Envy, Pride) Will all 7 murders get completed before he's found?? You must see the movie.

It is a great story, not "edge of your seat" kind of suspense though. It did make me nervous a little and for those kind of movies, that's a good sign. It has a certain gore factor, though it's pretty few and far between times when you see that. The end is a little shocking the first time if you haven't seen it, I totally forgot and tried to guess through the entire last 20 minutes what was happening. (Andy reminding me to knock it off and enjoy the movie)
